Pharmacological Action
Tetracycline antibiotic.
It inhibits both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Cross-resistance may occur between oxytetracycline and doxycycline.
Indications
Used for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria in pigs and chickens, including:
- Escherichia coli
- Salmonella
- Pasteurella
- Mycoplasma
Dosage and Administration
Drinking water:
- Pigs: 0.5–1 g/L
- Chickens: 0.75–1.25 g/L
- Duration: 3–5 days
Adverse Reactions
Long-term use may cause secondary infection and liver damage.
Precautions
- Do not use with penicillins, or feeds containing calcium, iron, or multivalent metal ions.
- Concurrent use with strong diuretics may increase renal toxicity.
- Avoid mixing with high-chlorine water or alkaline solutions.
- Contraindicated in animals with severe liver or kidney dysfunction.
Withdrawal Period
- Pigs: 7 days
- Chickens: 5 days
- Egg withdrawal: 2 days
