Pharmacological Action
Florfenicol is an amphenicol antibiotic.
It is used for bacterial diseases caused by susceptible pathogens in pigs, poultry, and fish, including:
- Pasteurella haemolytica
- Pasteurella multocida
- Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (respiratory diseases in cattle and pigs)
Also effective for:
- Salmonella infections (typhoid and paratyphoid)
- Fowl cholera
- Pullorum disease
- Escherichia coli infections
Aquatic applications:
- Pasteurella
- Vibrio
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Aeromonas hydrophila
- Enteritis bacteria
Diseases treated:
- Septicemia
- Enteritis
- Red skin disease
Drug Interactions
- Macrolides and lincosamides share the same target (50S ribosome) and may cause antagonism
- May antagonize penicillins and aminoglycosides (not confirmed in vivo)
