Pharmacological Action
Acriflavine hydrochloride is an antiprotozoal agent.
Effective against:
- Babesia equi
- Babesia caballi
- Babesia bovis
- Babesia bigemina
- Babesia ovis
Not effective against:
- Theileria
- Anaplasma
Indications
Antiprotozoal drug.
Used for treatment of:
- Babesiosis (piroplasmosis)
Dosage and Administration
Intravenous injection:
- Usual dose (single dose):
- Horses, cattle: 0.6–0.8 ml/kg
- Sheep, pigs: 0.6 ml/kg
- Maximum dose:
- Horses, cattle: 400 ml
- Sheep, pigs: 100 ml
Adverse Reactions
- Strong toxicity; may cause:
- Tachycardia
- Restlessness
- Rapid breathing
- Increased intestinal motility
- Strong irritation to tissues
Precautions
- Inject slowly; avoid extravasation
- Repeat administration should be at 24–48 hour intervals
