Pharmacological Action
Sarafloxacin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal agent specifically for veterinary use. It has strong antibacterial activity against most Gram-negative bacteria and some Gram-positive bacteria, including Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter, Campylobacter, Shigella, Proteus, and Pasteurella.
Its activity against mycoplasma is slightly weaker than that of difloxacin.
After oral administration, it is rapidly absorbed, reaching peak plasma concentration within 1–3 hours. The bioavailability in chickens is approximately 61%. It is widely distributed in the body and excreted mainly via the kidneys, with high concentrations in urine. The half-life in chickens is approximately 3.3 hours.
Indications
Fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
Used for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by susceptible bacteria.
Dosage and Administration
Administer via drinking water:
- Chickens: 0.25–0.5 g per liter of water
- Duration: 3–5 days
Adverse Reactions
- May cause cartilage degeneration in young animals, affecting bone development and leading to lameness and pain.
- Gastrointestinal reactions may include vomiting, anorexia, and diarrhea.
- Skin reactions may include erythema, itching, urticaria, and photosensitivity.
