Pharmacological Action
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It reversibly binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, interfering with the formation of the ribosome complex between tRNA and mRNA, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and suppressing bacterial growth and reproduction.
Doxycycline is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Cross-resistance may occur between doxycycline and oxytetracycline.
It is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with minimal influence from food intake. It has high bioavailability, strong tissue penetration, wide distribution, and a long duration of effective plasma concentration. The protein binding rate in pigs is approximately 93%.
Indications
Tetracycline antibiotic.
Used for the treatment of infections in pigs and chickens caused by susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including:
- Escherichia coli
- Salmonella
- Pasteurella
- Mycoplasma-related respiratory diseases
Dosage and Administration
Administer via drinking water:
- Pigs: 0.25–0.5 g per liter of water
- Chickens: 3 g per liter of water
- Duration: 3–5 days
Adverse Reactions
Long-term use may cause secondary infections and liver damage.
Precautions
- Not for use in laying hens producing eggs for human consumption.
- Avoid simultaneous use with feed containing high levels of calcium.
